Cov-ID Digital Certificate
There has been much speculation on how the lock-down can be lifted with as little impact as possible on public health. Several countries have been considering ways to allow people to get back to work without posing a risk to their coworkers and members of society. This is particularly important for key workers. Holding a Digital Certificate or «Cov-ID» will provide a systematic way to «prove» the right to be out of the quarantine and back to work. At the moment this is happening through messaging services but a digital wallet will allow for different types of «certificates» which can vary based on their duration and reason. For example, these certificates can also be used to prove immunity through vaccination and/or antibodies once a person has recovered from the virus. These can also restrict movement if one belongs to a sensitive category (or «ευπαθείς ομάδες» ). Further control can be exercised if the government chooses to relax measures on an ad hoc basis based the progress of the virus in the country.
Whilst this system seems difficult to develop, a blockchain-based solution can bring several benefits with its properties such as immutability, time-stamping, pseudonymity, and distributed architecture – confirmation nodes will provide consensus and immutable records for the issuance of the certificates and people will be able to demonstrate with cloud-based verification (private keys) on their wallet.
For the purposes of this hackathon, a mock-up can be built to demonstrate how the system will function and be used as a blueprint if and when this will be required in the future.
